Protective Measures Of Children’s Play Areas

We the undersigned petition the council to make safe the public Children’s play areas in Charminster, Springbourne, Winton and Queens Park which are for the intended use of children and families, by the installation and operation of protective measures to prevent the misuse of these places and the illegal activities which are carried out in them.

Residents are increasingly finding the play areas and parks unsafe for children. The situation is escalating all the time with increased frequency of drug dealing and use in and in the direct vicinity of play areas and parks meant for young children. This culminated in the murder of a man at Shelbourne Road in the alleyway that runs adjacent to Cyril Park. This terrible event could have been witnessed by or had involved children in the crossfire. Further Cyril Park is a den for criminal activity, including heroin dealing and use. The remains of used drug paraphernalia abandoned on benches, in bushes and on the grass for children to inquisitively pick up to investigate. We need to protect our children so that while young and still exploring they are not subject to coming into contact with life limiting infectious, contaminated items, and as they are growing to adults, they are not de-sensitised to this as being normal and acceptable. We need CCTV installed, adequate street lighting and night security lighting installed, high secure fencing along borders with alleys and gated access which is locked at night. The parks should have daily, morning cleaning checks. We also need these well known areas to be stepped up in patrols. So much more can and needs to be done to protect our families and children.
