Overflowing litter bins are a recurring issue along Bournemouth
and Boscombe beaches, seafront and clifftop areas, particularly
during busy periods, weekends and warmer weather. The problem
occurs year after year with little visible improvement, despite
increasing visitor numbers. Many people are clearly attempting to
dispose of their litter responsibly, but bins are frequently full,
leading to rubbish being left beside bins or scattered by wind
across beaches, pathways and clifftop areas. This creates an
eyesore and contributes to wider litter accumulation across the
seafront environment.
This ongoing issue has negative impacts on the local environment
and wildlife, contributes to unpleasant smells, and raises concerns
around public health, safety and the overall visitor experience. It
also risks damaging the reputation of Bournemouth and Boscombe as
clean, well-maintained coastal destinations that rely heavily on
tourism.
We therefore ask BCP Council to review current provision across
beaches, seafront and clifftop routes, identify high-pressure
areas, and take action through improved bin provision,
larger-capacity bins where appropriate, and more frequent emptying
schedules to ensure waste services match demand throughout the
year.
