The Vegan Triangle
In recent years, the Vegan Triangle attracted its nickname due to
the high concentration of vegan and vegan friendly businesses in
the area. Bournemouth is ranked in the top-ten UK vegan-friendly
towns coming in at number four on a list published by Your
Zooki.
HappyCow’s plant-based food guide lists 178 veg friendly
eateries and stores in the Bournemouth area, nine of which are
dedicated vegan restaurants. This is a way above average number for
a town the size of Bournemouth!
The Vegan Triangle is home to some of the UK’s finest vegan
establishments, including our only vegan organic supermarket,
Sunrise Organics and eateries such as Mad Cucumber, Mighty Wieners,
Pondok Fresh Falafel & Juice and Twelve Eatery, who were named
the fifth best vegan restaurant in the world by TripAdvisor.
Climate Emergency
On 16 July 2019 BCP declared a climate emergency and we call on the
council to follow recommendations of the Plant Based Treaty by
promoting healthy plant-based diets as part of a range of measures
to address the climate, ocean and biodiversity crisis. As a coastal
region, climate change poses a serious risk to the future of
Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole. The recent collapse of the
Conger ice shelf is of great concern and signs that the Thwaites
glacier in Antarctica is cracking, risking significant sea level
rises here at home is extremely worrying.
Plant-based for the planet
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) makes it clear
in their sixth assessment report that plant-based foods are key to
limiting global temperature rises to 1.5C. Animal farming is
responsible for around a third of methane emissions and the IPCC
make it clear that these emissions must peak by 2025 at the latest
and halve by 2030 to avoid a climate catastrophe.
BCP can lead the way on climate policy by encouraging residents to
go plant-based for the planet and formally recognise the
contribution of vegan businesses in The Triangle to meeting our
climate pledges by renaming the zone The Vegan Triangle.
